Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has appointed German national Jurgen Peschel as its CEO. Peschel's appointment follows the abrupt resignation of former managing director Anthony Masunga in August 2024.
Most recently, Peschel served as the CEO of 9Mobile, the fifth-largest telecommunications company in Nigeria.
He holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Ulm, Germany, and delivered his thesis in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Manitoba, Canada.
He also earned a degree in Business Administration from the Université de Saint-Boniface in Canada and completed the Management Development Programme at IMD in Switzerland.
"His unique blend of technical acumen, business leadership and cross-cultural expertise positions him to lead BTC through the next wave of digital transformation as our new CEO," BTC said.
"The Board would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Peschel and thank Ms Boitumelo Paya for her leadership as the Acting CEO for the past few months."
Peschel assumes the hot seat of an organisation which has struggled with growth since its listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange. During Masunga's tenure between 2017 and 2024, BTC saw its revenues drop by 65%.
BTC also had to contend with numerous brand and organisational issues, including the public legal battle with organisers of the Born n Raised music festival and restructurings that saw hundreds of employees lose their jobs.
Peschel will officially start his role on 1 July 2025.
