BOCRA Approves Reduced Data Prices for BTC

Botswana’s telecoms regulator has approved reduced mobile data prices for Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), a move expected to improve affordability and boost consumer choice in the local communications market.

In a statement issued this week, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) said it had approved revised data tariffs for BTC with immediate effect, following the implementation of recommendations from a pricing and costing study concluded in May 2025.

The regulator said the decision aligns with its mandate to promote access to affordable communication services while maintaining transparency and competition in the telecommunications sector.

Under the revised structure, several existing BTC data bundles have been discontinued and replaced with new offerings that provide more data at the same or lower price points. For short-term usage, BTC has introduced new one-day bundles including 100MB for P2 and 300MB for P5, while a 1.5GB one-day bundle is now available for P10. A new three-day 3GB bundle has also been introduced at P25.

Weekly bundles have similarly been adjusted, with a new 500MB seven-day bundle priced at P20 and a 2.5GB option reduced from P50 to P40. For longer-term usage, BTC’s two-week 5GB bundle has been reduced from P99 to P60, while new monthly bundles include 4GB for P65 and 8GB for P99.

Larger data packages have also been restructured. New 30-day bundles include 30GB for P199, 50GB for P269 and 100GB for P349, while several older packages with higher effective per-gigabyte costs have been withdrawn.

BOCRA also published a comparison of mobile data prices across Botswana’s three mobile network operators, BTC, Orange and Mascom, to help consumers make informed choices. The comparison shows that BTC’s revised pricing is now broadly aligned with, and in some cases more competitive than, comparable bundles offered by rival operators, particularly in the higher-volume monthly data segment.

According to BOCRA, the pricing intervention forms part of broader efforts to ensure that consumers benefit from cost-based tariffs while encouraging healthy competition among operators.

“BOCRA remains committed to promoting and maintaining a transparent, competitive and consumer-focused communications sector,” the regulator said, adding that it will continue monitoring market developments to ensure access to high-quality, reliable and affordable communication services in line with Botswana’s economic transformation goals.
