In Conversation: Tshepang Sports (Solutions Specialist, Huawei Botswana)

BW TechZone caught up with Tshepang Sports, Solutions Specialist at Huawei Botswana, to get more insights on how he got into tech, his favourite parts of the work he does, his future aspirations for his career and much more.

Briefly take us through your journey to a career in tech

Growing up, I was exposed to computers and gadgets at a young age. I excelled in Mathematics and Science during my schooling career and was drawn to the technology field because of my natural curiosity and passion for solving complex problems. I also have a desire for continuous learning – the tech industry is ever-evolving, requiring professionals to stay up to date with the latest advancements.

Please tell us what your job entails

I am a Product and Solutions Manager. The department provides tailored technical solutions and optimizations for new/key customers. I am responsible for performing market analysis and output sales strategies and roadmaps for carrier clients. Additionally, I analyse technical demand, product function and related licensing. I work closely with account managers and other departments to ensure the successful delivery of projects.

What is your favourite part of the job you do?

Technology has the power to create positive change on a global scale. What I love most about my job is the potential for impact. I am driven by the idea of making a difference and improving business processes for our customers

What are the most exciting and challenging projects have you undertaken?

Due to the nature of our work, we cannot disclose the customer we service but generally, the most challenging projects I have undertaken are the roll-out and implementation of 5G technologies.

The field you are in is constantly changing with new technologies being introduced from time to time. How do you ensure that your skillset always remains relevant?

To ensure my skillset remains relevant in the ever-changing tech landscape, I consider and implement the following strategies:

Continuous Learning: I engage with online courses, tutorials, workshops, and books to keep up with new technologies, languages, and tools.

Industry News: Regularly follow tech news, blogs, and forums to stay informed about emerging trends, breakthroughs, and shifts in the industry

Professional Networks: Connect with peers, mentors, and professionals in your field. Networking can provide insights, and collaboration opportunities, and keep you updated on industry happenings.

The list is really endless. Remember, everyone's journey is unique, but these general steps can provide a roadmap to a fulfilling career in the tech industry.

What has been the proudest moment in your career?

I was awarded Employee Ambassador and Excellent Employee awards which im very proud of.

What is something you know now that you wish you received earlier on in your career?

I cannot stress the importance of maintaining a professional network.

If any, what is the best advice you have received in your career?

To make strategic career decisions, it is important to evaluate your career every year. Consider sharpening your knowledge of new industry trends each year to remain competitive in the job market.

Career-wise, where do you see Tshepang in the next 5 – 10 years?

I am really excited and confident about my career trajectory and I see myself eventually developing into a leader in the ICT space.
